your Madeira holiday home

'Raposeira de São João'

In Madeira there are plenty of small and inexpensive bars and restaurants. You eat well everywhere and the prices are - in our eyes, very low. But there are some that we like even more than others, and we would like to share our sercrets with you.

The best Peixe Espada in the neighbourhood we have at the Onda Azul, on the east side of the hotel Calheta Beach in Calheta. They also serve a delicious Feijoada do Mar. Simply very good quality at very affordable prices.

A drink with a spectacular view we have at O Precipicio. Just leave the house, up the alley and turn left at the top, then follow the road until the bottom, turn left and start following the signs for Paul do Mar. You can't miss it on your right hand's side. You can even see it if you look down from our parking lot, once you know where to look.

For a quick and cheap Italian (more or less) meal we often go to Prazeres. Nice people, the food is OK and very cheap. Good idea if you don't feel like cooking. The small restaurant is across from the church. Don't take the Via Expresso but stay on the Regional 222. When you arrive in the village, take slightly to the right and you will soon see the restaurant on the right hand's side. In winter it may be chilly inside.

The Madeiran Poncha is an absolute must. It is sold anywhere in the island. We prefer to have it in the Taverna da Poncha in Serra de Agua, on the left hand's side on the road between Ribeira Brava and Sao Vincente. The bar is very small, but the parking lot is large and often full. That makes it easier to find. Ask for a Poncha de Limao (lemon) or a Poncha de Laranja (orange). Make sure you are in the right Taverna. A little further along the road there is another one on the right hand's side, but that is not the one we like.

For a cheap lunch we sit ourselves down under the Ficus tree on the harbour in Paul do Mar. We drink a good glass of Vinho Verde and eat a Prego Normal, a large steak sandwich. Amazingly cheap and often too much to finish. Say 'yes' if they ask you if you prefer the special bread Bolo de Caco. A delicious bread mad with sweet potatoes.

Whenever in Funchal, we always have lunch or drinks - depending on the time of day - in the Parque Municipal. We sit down at the street cafe Cafe Concerto, next to the open air theatre. A good place to be, even if it rains as they have large parasols. Take in the atmosphere amidst exotic plants and trees, and feel the atmosphere which reminds of a colonial past but also feels like a contemporary and elegant city.

We have made more tips ready for you at the house.
